Free Voices of Crimea is a collection of portraits of sixteen political prisoners-journalists who are fighting for human rights and freedom of speech on the occupied peninsula. Russia has imprisoned them for terms ranging from seven to nineteen years. Most of the characters in this book are Crimean Tatars, so in many of the portraits, the reader will find an explanation of the historical context and understand the reasons for the indigenous people of Crimea's continued resistance to the Soviet and now Russian system. The book includes selected letters and excerpts from the diaries of the Crimean Tatars.
