The Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon (AKL) is simply without compare as a work providing extensive, up-to-date and competent information on artists from all over the world. With Volume 31, the letter E has now been reached; by late 2002, 35 of the approximately 100 volumes will have been published. This amounts to just one third of the scheduled total of over 500,000 artists' biographies available upon completion. Thanks to the Bio-bibliographical Index by Profession, however, this impressive wealth of information is accessible now!

Representing a singular index of fine artists from antiquity to the present day, the Biobibliographical Index by Profession encompasses not only painters, sculpt...ors and architects but also etchers, body-artists, cartoonists, damascenes and lapidaries -- to name but a few of the artistic professions listed. The biographical entries are based on over 200 major international artists' dictionaries, comprising a total of some 500 volumes, whose data -- along with source references -- are indexed by the Bio-bibliographical Index by Profession in a clearly structured manner. This body of names and data has been supplemented with material from the published volumes of AKL, Thieme-Becker and Vollmer as well as additional details researched by the editorial staff. The index thus represents a biographical reference work for artists of all ages and countries in its own right.

Basically, the index is structured by 68 artistic professional groups (in English), ranging from 'architect' via 'marquetry inlayer' to 'woodcrafter'. The classification of the 744 professional titles applied in the entries themselves can be gathered from the Overview of Professions and their Classification. Within professional groups, artists are organized alphabetically by country and within countries in chronological order. Commencing with the Afghan (Bactrian) architect Astilogans-igo (around 231 AD), the Bio-bibliographical Index by Profession thus also provides a chronological overview of the history of artists and the development of various art forms in individual countries.

Providing up-to-date information, the short entries comprise the artist's name (including name variants and pseudonyms), fields of artistic activity, biographical dates, places of birth and death (if not known: place and date first and/or last mentioned), country classification and at least one bibliographical source reference.

Further indexes and synopses facilitate fast and targeted searches for individual artists and professional groups -- even for users less familiar with the highly specialized English terminology. For each professional title listed in English, the five-language Glossary of Occupations) provides German, French, Italian and Spanish equivalents. As the user information, the Overview of Professions and their Classification and the Alphabetical List of Countries) are provided in five languages, too, the Bio-bibliographical Index by Profession is a genuine treasure trove of information to be used all around the globe.

Long before completion of the AKL, the Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon.
