Opis: Illustrated ISTC CD-ROM

The Illustrated ISTC is based on the Incunabula Short-Title Catalogue, a database of 15th century printing which has been in development at The British Library since 1980. A practical understanding of the history, coverage and structure of the ISTC will give the user of this illustrated version an idea of what can fruitfully be asked of the database and what kind of answers are given. ISTC was first conceived by Dr Lotte Hellinga of the Incunabula Section of The British Library , putting to use the methods devised for the Library’s machine-readable Eighteenth-Century Short Title catalogue of English books (ESTC) in the late 1970s. Each ISTC record represents a single edition with variants within an edition being accommodated by notes within the record. The author, title, imprint and format are distributed into discrete fields, numerically coded for easy retrieval in machine searching. As far as possible, everything is reduced to a uniform and standard form, whatever the wording of the original. The Second Edition of the IISTC presents several new features:

• a new Interface which is clearer and easier to use
• the bibliography and locations, which were previously given only in the coded or abbreviated form of the ISTC, can now be seen in a full extended version
• a new field, ‘Microfiche’, has been created to record editions which have been published in full-text in Microfiche Collection, Incunabula: The Printing Revolution in Europe, 1455-1500 (also published by Primary Source Media), providing both the unit and fiche numbers. IISTC can now be used as a complete index to this collection.
