Opis: Munich Catalogue of Early Printed Books CD-ROM

On the 2nd CD-ROM edition the catalogue data of the old holdings of printed works of both Munich libraries, the Bavarian State Library (BSB) and the Munich University Library (UBM), are now accessible for the first time together on CD-ROM. That they share Munich as a location is neither chance nor of merely superficial importance, rather the old holdings of both libraries complement each other wonderfully. The holdings recorded here include, on the one hand, the original holdings of the two oldest and largest scholarly libraries of Bavaria within the boundaries as of 1800; and on the other hand, the holdings of the former ecclesiastical libraries secularised at the beginning of the 19th c...entury. As a result, this catalogue gives access to the historical literary heritage of an important cultural area. The collections of the two libraries also complement each other by representing a big European court library of universal scope in the first case and in the second a big old university library with literature reflecting the needs of scholarship and academic research. The collections of these two big libraries in Munich constitute the most extensive historical stock of books in the German-speaking countries and one of the most substantial in any European city.

The 2nd CD-ROM contains approximately 850,000 titles published between 1501 and 1840 or 1850, along with their shelf marks. In all the number of titles available on the second edition has increased by almost 60%. About 570,000 titles come from the BSB, meaning that approximately 30,000 new titles have been added to this edition. Around 300,000 titles from the UBM have been included for the first time.

The system of subject groups which had been applied to the old titles subject groups have been paraphrased according to the German Rules for Subject Catalogue making it possible to access the old holdings by subject.

A thesaurus of place names developed in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek has been integrated. All variations of a place name included in the bibliographical entries can be displayed. It is possible to search specifically for entries in which a certain name variant occurs, or for all titles published at a particular place.
