Opis: US Allies in Changing World - Rubin

Since the beginning of the Cold War in the 1940s, the United States has been the leader of a far-ranging alliance system, which includes countries from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. The history of these alliances presents one of the most interesting episodes in modern diplomacy. Many countries and their governments saw their relationship to the United States as a vital one. The link was a source of economic and political aid, strategic backing, intelligence cooperation, or for joint regional efforts. Complicating these relationships, however, were the different objectives of the individual countries and, in some cases, conflicts between the allies themselves. Also present was the tension of divergent interests between the junior and senior partners. At times, only the need to combat the spread of communist-bloc influence bound these partners together. Several historic changes have forced major adjustments to these relationships. The Cold War's end removed a fundamental cause of these alliances and perhaps part of the motivation for maintaining them. In its absence, priority has switched to regional conflicts and other more local issues. The United States' post-Cold international role has been challenged by domestic needs. Yet American responsibilities are, if anything, enhanced in an essentially unipolar world. More than ever before the United States has a capacity for global hegemony. This work explores the development of the United States' alliances from the American perspective, as well as from that of its most important allies - Britain, Germany, the Gulf States, Israel, Turkey, Australia, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.
