Opis: Negotiated Risks International Talks on Hazardous Issues - R Avenhaus

This book fills a major gap in the risk literature, as it brings together two research strands: risks, to which IIASA's research programs have contributed significantly over the years, culminating in the Risk and Vulnerability Program, and international negotiations, on which there is an abundance of published work, much of it resulting from the work of IIASA's Processes of International Negotiations Program. Throughout the book, it is pointed out that there are actor-driven risks, namely those posed by international negotiations themselves, and issue-driven risks which are caused by large-scale human activities. In fact, negotiated risks deal with some of the most serious risks facing humanity: climate change, nuclear activities, and weapons of mass destruction. The book contains both scientific analyses on the nature of internationally negotiated risks and analyses of concrete risks, both of which are of immense practical relevance in the larger context of international negotiations.Introduction by Rudolf Avenhaus and Gunnar Sjostedt; Part I - Theoretical Perspectives: Negotiator's Risk: The General Case by Christophe Dupont; Risky Business: Curable and Incurable Risks in the International Mediation of Violent Conflict by Fen Osler Hampson; Take the Risk and Trust? The Strategic Role of Trust in Negotiations by Sabine Theresia Koeszegi; Prospect Theory and Negotiation by Rose McDermott; Risk and Preventive Negotiations by I. William Zartman; Part II -Case Studies: Negotiation Risk: Controlling Biological Weapons by P. Terrence Hopmann; Negotiations on National Security Risks: The Case of U.S.-Soviet Relations by Victor Kremenyuk; Transboundary Risks: The Case of Temelin by Helmut Bock and Dana Drabova; Spent Fuel Import, Storage, and Reprocessing in the Russian Federation: An Evaluation of Actors and Risks by Keith Compton; Negotiating Climate Change: The Search for Joint Risk Management by Gunnar Sjostedt; Managing Security and Safety Risks in the Baltic Sea Region by Boris Porfiriev; The Multimodal Character of "Talk" and the Negotiation of Joint Financial Risk Management in an International Context by Bev Sauer; Negotiating Risks across Cultures: Joint Ventures in China by Guy Olivier Faure; Conclusions by Rudolf Avenhaus and Gunnar Sjostedt.
