I wish to express my grateful acknowledgments to the following: -

To the Editor of Fry's Outdoor Magazine for permission to incorporate in this volume the substance of an article contributed to his magazine;

I have endeavoured to illustrate the various movements and positions of the stroke by means of photographs. It was, of course, impossible for me to obtain the services of an eight-oared crew for this purpose, and I have had to confine myself, therefore, chiefly: (1) to photographs of a single individual, and (2) to photographs of a pair-oar, both at rest and in motion.
