L'ouvrage en tte duquel parat cet avant-propos a t commenc en 1866. Le premier volume, contenant les textes, tait imprim, moins le glossaire, en septembre 1870, lorsque Paris fut spar, pour cinq mois et demi, du reste du monde. Le second volume, consacr l'histoire de la lgende, fut mis sous presse en 1877 et l'impression n'en a t termine que cette anne.

Si je fais part au lecteur de ces circonstances, c'est moins pour excuser que pour expliquer certaines inconsquences qu'il et t facile d'viter dans un ouvrage compos et imprim sans interruption.
