"My dear Lloyd: -

When "Tillers of the Soil" was finished I had almost enough material left to make another such novel. Since then I have gleaned during some six gears in the same field, and here is a sheaf of my gleanings. A friend, to whom I shewed the proofs, ventured the opinion that "the theme of the book is the tie between Ben and Miriam." So I hasten to assure you that such is not the case. The theme is strictly rural life - fourfold in the doings of Ben and Miriam, Adam and his ambitions and mental devolution, the psychology of Ramzern, and the same of the Sheirlaws; in fact, you may make it as manifold as there are threads in the story. But please bear in mind that whilst each individual in these pages is a living piece of flesh and blood to me, he or she is also representative of a class in the community, in which there are, thank Heaven, always more good than bad. But, then, the really good are not game to the realist; they are usually without much character, and are therefore only poultry to him, and rather insipid because of lacking a pinch of the Devil's salt and a grain of his pepper. And what is here true of the novelist is equally so of the reader.

As to the moral of it all: Life teems with moralities; they spring out of every-day doings, as swift glances come from sparkling eyes, mischief from a robustious boy, and acorns from oaks - to be oaks in their turn some day.
