Excerpt from Lehigh Alumni Bulletin, Vol. 4

We are not worthy of the greater opportunities that have been ours if we don't measure up to the responsibilities such opportunities entail. Only when we can truthfully say we have left no stone unturned in our efforts to be of service, when we have made every sacrifice and have seen to it that every organ over which we have any control is functioning in a way to give the maximum result, can we say "we are doing our part." Our share does not depend on what another does or can do. It is measured only by our own possibilities.

This Association of yours is trying to help the University in securing and training young men for our Government service. Lehigh has furnished 800 trained men to the Army and Navy and, God helping us, we will keep our complement full. We are working with the University authorities to help when and where we can in their magnificent efforts to utilize in war service the teaching staff, equipment, buildings and grounds of the University. We are securing Lehigh men for Government departments, the Y. M. C. A. and private enterprises doing Government work. We are keeping track of our boys in the Army and Navy, compiling their records, offering to aid them, preparing to stand back of them during this war and to find them positions when they come out of it. Don't you suppose it means a lot to them to know that in spite of all the demands the war is making on every mans time and money, twice as many Lehigh men are in the Association as were in when the war broke out, especially when they know that the reason for it is that every loyal Lehigh man is feeling the call to swing into line behind its fighting men But it is not enough to hear the call. You must answer it. Hundreds of good Lehigh men have so far failed to do so. We need them and on their action may depend the success or failure of our efforts. Now what are you doing to help Lehigh do her full share We have launched our attack. We have made a break and driven a wedge into the enemy's line. But our position is a salient that is hard to hold and is of little value unless developed further. Are you in the reserve Hear the call then. More men there! Lehigh! Widen the salient!

The possibilities of this work are great. They are limited merely by the number of men who will heed the call. Sooner or later you will all be in, but meanwhile some measure of success is being lost through your delay. I know you are spending yourself fully and freely in our country's service. But if there is one channel of effort to which we can contribute which his not flowing swiftly and strongly we have failed in our duty. How much more have we failed, if our college, which can only function properly through the efforts of Lehigh men, fails to do its full part because half the Alumni, a quarter of them or even one of them, fails to support its efforts. And what about our boys on the firing line. What greater duty do we owe them than that of helping to keep up the courage and morale of these comrades of ours at the front Are the bleachers to sit silent while the great game is on When our team is beaten back and is fighting under the shadow of its own goal posts, is there to be no encouraging shout from those of us on the side lines Fight, Lehigh, Fight! Can't you see their backs stiffen, the fire flash in their eyes as they hear the booming yell from 5000 Lehigh throats Are you one of us Does your voice go to make up the war cry that will reach from old South Mountain to the front-line trenches in France Or are you the kind that says, "Oh, let them fight. I've got something else to do this afternoon. Besides I want to save my voice to serenade the Fem Sems" God help you if you are that brand of a human. Not that I believe He will. I merely mention it in passing. My real prayer is that He strengthen the arms and hearts of our fighting men and make us willing to play our part and be worthy of their great sacri
