Fellow-Citizens,

Fifty-eight years have elapsed since our fathers declared to the world the great fundamental doctrine of human freedom, that "all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." Sincere in this declaration, they called God and the nations to witness their truth; no hypocrisy lurked in their hearts, and their actions set the seal to their professions. Scarcely had the war of independence been concluded, ere the citizens of the several states commenced a course of action calculated to abolish slavery, the only remaining feature of that oppression which a foreign yoke had imposed upon them. The immortal names of Franklin and Rush are enrolled among the first officers of the Abolition Society of Pennsylvania. In New-York, names as illustrious were to be found in the same cause, - Jay, King, and Hamilton, were men who not only engaged in the contest for liberty during the Revolution, but were active in every effort to effect the abolition of slavery after its conclusion, and the writings of the sage of Monticello contain abundant evidence of his strong aversion to slavery.
