1. I tre ragguagli pi important dei grammatici latini sulla pronuncia delle esplosive dentali furono gi portati da E. Seelmann nel noto studio Die Aussprache des Latein e pi tardi da H. T. Karsten nella Uitspraak van het Latijn 116 e dal Lindsay, The Latin Language 82. Non sar per inutile il ricordarli al principio d' una ricerca che deve prender le mosse dall' articolazione latina. Terenziano Mauro (sec. III, d' origine africana) s' esprime (Keil, Gramm. VI, 331, 199 seg.):

at portio dentes quotiens suprema linguae
pulsaverit imos modiceque curua summos
tunc d sonitum perficit explicatque uocem;
t qua superis dentibus intima est origo,
summa satis est ad sonitum ferire lingua.

Molto simile la descrizione attribuita a Mario Vittorino (grammatico della met del IV secolo, anche lui africano: Keil, Gramm. VI, 33, 2.seg): d autem et t, quibus, ut ita dixerim, uocis uicinitas quaedam est, linguae sublatione ae positione distinguuntur. Nam cum summos atque imos conjuctim dentes suprema sui parte pulsaverit, d litteram exprimit, quotiens autem sublimate partem, qua superis dentibus est origo, contigerit, t sonore uocis explicabit. Poco di nuovo ci porta Marziano Capella (III, 261): d applulsu linguae circa superiors dentes innascitur - t appulsu linguae dentibusque impulsis extunditur (csr. L' anonimo de litteris C. del supplement del Keil, Gramm. 307, 8), assolutamente nulla Dositeo (keil, Gramm. VII, 384) che non stabilisce differenza alcuna fra l' articolazione della media e della tenue e definisce tutte due semplicemente secondo la vecchia tradizione grammatical come litera consonans muta. Senza speciale riguardo alle dentali Prisciano s' esprime sul rapport fra la media e la tenue nel modo seguente (Instit. Liber I, 26 = Keil, Gramm. I, 209 seg.): inter c sine aspiration et cum aspiration est g, inter t quoque et t hest d et inter p et ph sive f est b. Sunt igitur hac tres, hoc est b, d, g, mediae quae pentitus carent aspiration nec eam plenam possident. Ora, per quanto la testimonianza d' un autore del secolo sesto possa tornar gradita al romanista, di Prisciano, vissuto in Costantinopoli e pi che molti altri grammatici latini esposto all' influsso della scuola greca, sar bene non fidarsi.
