Among all questions, theoretical or practical - philosophical, scientific, ethical and those of every day life - the problem as to the origin of species I may say stands second only to that of man's conception of himself and his destiny.

It is not the purpose of this paper to discuss the philosophy of the mutation theory or the data upon which it rests, but simply to record as briefly as possible, in trite terms, a few facts of some important observations - omitting detail and technique - in that process of evolution as furnished by the Culicid.

The question of the origin of species is the origin of specific characteristics or differential marks. According to one theory they arise gradually through accumulation of the order of fluctuations. According to the other they arise suddenly and completely as mutations. By this method new species have been seen to arise in the succession of generations in plants, where the process was brought under direct observation.

The study of the Culicid in this problem is pregnant with great interest and affords the philosophical student one of the most important fields for research in animal life.
