Opis: A Synopsis of the Animal Kingdom Together With a Laboratory Practicum of Invertebrate Zo?logy (Classic Reprint) - Wilder Harris Hawthorne

Excerpt from A Synopsis of the Animal Kingdom Together With a Laboratory Practicum of Invertebrate Zology

A. PROTOZOA.

Unicellular animal organisms. Reproduction by fission ami gemination, also by conjugation, which may simulate sex-differentiation. Colonial forms may show polymorphism (with division of lahor) and thus serve as transition* forms Iwtween Protozoa and MrtazOa.

B. METAZOA.

Multicellnlar animal organisms with sex-differentiation. The individual begins as a single cell, formed by the union of two half cells (egg and spermatozoon) produced by the parents.

During development all uietazoa pass through a Nustulu and ijaxfnila stage, supposed repetitions of ancient Nnstaeu and gaftmoi forms.

DIVISION I. PKOTAXON1A (Cocleutcmta).

"Gastraea animals." i. e. forms with persisting gastraea characteristics, the primary axis, the protwtnma and the gastrocoele. from which all the cavities of the body may be derived. No coelom.

Type I. Porifera.

Gastraea animals, sessile by the protostoma. Secondary excnrrent owning, osenhtin. at the apical pole: with numerous Intend pores in the body wall. Middle layer (inesencbyina) present, deriveil from the primary eudoderm. In this are produced spicules. and the genu cells.

Type II. Cmdaria.

GastmcH-Hiiiinals. mostly marine, free-swimming or sessile at the aboral |ole. Develop tentacles around thu protostoma. Certain socialized ectoderm cells form Cnidoblasts (nettle cells). These are most numerous on the tentacles and serve as weajioiis. Middle layer a snpiHirting lamella, seldom cellular. Genu cells from ectoderm or endndenn.
