The sort of land generally thought to stand in need of paring and burning is that which cannot easily be pulverised by other means, such as moss, rushes, and coarse grasses of all kinds. Land of good quality of any soil, if it has been eaten by sheep, seldom requires paring and burning; for sheep, when mixed with cattle and horses, eat land so even that the sward may easily be pulverized. In that case it may be unnecessary to pare and burn.
