This drama is not founded on fact. Although many similar incidents are to be found in the Acts of the Martyrs, I thought it better not to select any particular one, but to express, as well as I could, the heroic character of the primitive Christian, in his language, his firmness and his triumph. My only scope was to give pleasure to youth, by furnishing them, in the time of the Carnival, an innocent and useful amusement; this alone induced me to undertake this little work. Some of the students who belong to the Sodality of St. Aloysius, in the Roman College, took upon themselves the task of representing it, with the design of contributing to the recreation of their comrades; it was a part of my plan.
