Excerpt from Sketches and Rambles

The same reason which induced me to publish the recent volume of my Miscellanies has prompted me to issue the present work. Most of the following sketches were published in the unauthorized edition of my miscellaneous writings, without my knowledge or correction, and entirely contrary to my wishes. They were not only out of place where they appeared, but were not in a state to be published under any title, Some were composed in great haste, in order to fill up deficiencies in a Magazine I was editing at the time, and others never received my correction in the proofs. Many being written previous to more labored articles of similar character, and which I designed at a future time to collect in a permanent form, naturally contained passages and descriptions found also in the latter. It will be seen, therefore, at glance, what repetitions and irregularities and sometimes contradictions would occur in publishing them together without revision.
