When the author first became interested in this subject, he was surprised at the almost universal ignorance and prejudice concerning it. This fact, and the widespread interest which was taken in an article read at one of our medical meetings and published in several medical journals, convinced him that a scientific study of the whole ground, with the practical deductions therefrom, would be of much value to both lay and professional reader. To do this and make it thorough and convincing, it was found necessary to review a great deal of medical literature in different languages; from which were gathered many extracts from noted authorities, and many cases of prenatal influence, or maternal impressions, as they are there called.
