Opis: The Autobiography of the Reverend Lewis Grout With an Introduction by the Rev. Luther M. Keneston (Classic Reprint) - Grout Lewis

Excerpt from The Autobiography of the Reverend Lewis Grout With an Introduction by the Rev. Luther M. Keneston

Some months since, a ring of my door bell brought me face to face with a man as black as the night, but withal a man of remarkable grace and dignity, and evidently of superior intelligence. He gave his name as John Dube, and presently relieved my mental confusion by saying, "My father knew Lewis Grout." The circumstance suggested the substance of the following resolutions, unanimously passed by the Windham Association of Congregational Ministers, relative to the subject of the following autobiography:

Resolutions in Reference to Rev. Lewis Grout.

"Seldom, perhaps, has a man lived to see three generations of men brought to Christ through his own influence. Rev. Lewis Grout (born at Newfane, Vermont, January 28,1815, died in Brattleboro, Vermont, March 12, 1905,) was a missionary in South Africa from 1849 to 1862, and in his lifetime Christian natives and their children and their children's children rose up to call him blessed.

"We recognized in Mr. Grout a devout Christian, a scholar, and a man of affairs. He was a great reader and a prolific writer, to the last. His Zulu grammar, published in 1859, and revised in 1893, was among his greatest contributions to the literature of the world. We reverently acknowledge the good hand of God, in giving him so many years of life and the full possession of all his faculties, enabling him to rejoice in the fruits of his labors."

The writer of this introduction has no difficulty in associating this circumstance with the teaching of Jesus, recorded in John 12:25.
