The following work is a translation of part of the Fifth Volume of Ewald's "Geschichte des Volk's Israel." It is, as far as the Editor is aware, the first attempt to introduce this great scholar and thinker to those who are unacquainted with the German language. It might seem at first surprising that the works of one, who has unquestionably had so great an influence on Biblical study, should never have been brought before English readers. Not to dwell on other reasons to explain this, it is sufficient to mention the daring boldness of his views. One who should only judge of the tendency of the book from a general statement of the author's principles of enquiry, and the results at which he arrives, would probably imagine it wanting in reverence, and tending to undermine the foundation of our religion.
