In its own department of story telling literature, the Arabian Nights is not likely to be surpassed or even equalled in popularity, by any other work already before the public, or still to make its appearance. At the same time there are other collections of tales that may come somewhat near rivalling even it, in various features of interest and popularity.

In many respects, the work which might most nearly pass for rival, if that were possible, is the present volume. In character, style, and general scope it is greatly similar, and in some respects is superior - namely in the sense of beauty of language, as well as in the high and pure moral teaching inculcated in the narratives.

"The Tales of the Genii" have been universally recommended by men of high literary standing, as the purest and most beautiful of Oriental fiction; and for well nigh a century and a half have deservedly occupied a prominent position in the department of literary romance.

The tales uniformly inculcate religious faith and moral virtue. As in the case of the Arabian Nights the incidents narrated are associated with the thoughts, tastes, and convictions of the East.
