When I think of the early years of my life, I think of a wide green landscape, fertile, well-timbered, and swept always by fresh breezes from the German Ocean. I see great sheets of calm water reddened by the glow of sunset, and flights of wild-fowl in a black line against the sky, and the wherries, with their enormous brown sails, moving slowly along the dykes, and having, from a short distance, the appearance of sailing on dry land. I see an old redbrick house, too, with gables and twisted chimneys, standing in the midst of a perfectly level park.
