Historical figures should not be idealized: they should be humanized. All that a history book can give is a skeleton of the events in the order in which they took place. It is necessary for the teacher to take these events and infuse life into them. The central, active characters must become figures that live in the imaginations of the children. The new methods of teaching history in the elementary schools have followed closely the recommendations of the Committee of Eight of the American Historical Association. The child reader of history demands action on the part of his hero. He wants to know what has been done. The child lives the life of the hero in imagination, and mimics many of his deeds in play.

Most of the presentation of a new subject in history should be made with a map before the class. Places mentioned should be pointed out, preferably by the children. The first aim of the teacher should be to create a feeling on the part of the children that the character under discussion once lived, breathed and acted much as their own acquaintances do today.
