Opis: Conditions of Success in Genealogical Investigations - Fowler William Chauncey

Excerpt from Conditions of Success in Genealogical Investigations: Illustrated in the Character of Nathaniel Chauncey; A Paper Read Before the New England Historic-Genealogical Society in Boston, March 2, 1866

It is the affection that men feel for kindred, for those of the same blood. It is not friendship merely. It is not an affection for our acquaintance, for our kith, but an affection which we feel for our kin, for those who have descended from the same ancestor as ourselves, in whose veins courses the same blood as in our own. It is the affection which binds together the members of a family when under the same roof-tree, and, also afterwards, as by a wider clasp, when they are separated. It binds the child of wedded love to its parents, as if it were a part of themselves; and, in turn, it binds the parents to the child, by its hallowed influence, as if they were deities to be worshipped.

Nor is it confined in its exercise to families of the same household, but it holds, in its tender embrace, all who are related by a common descent, or who belong to the same clan, however remote in consanguinity, and however distant in space. The lines of Goldsmith describe its power,

"Where'er I roam, whatever realms I see,
My heart, untravelled, fondly turns to thee;
Still to my brother turns with ceaseless pain,
And drags at each remove a length'ning chain."
