Robert Oppenheimer has said, "One thing that is new is the prevalence of newness - the change in scale and scope of change itself - so that the world alters as we walk in it; so that the years of man's life measure not some small growth or rearrangement or moderation of what he learned in childhood, but a great upheaval." Stanley Morison, when he was editor of the Times Literary Supplement, said that the possession of the eleventh edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, published about fifty years ago, was really a wonderful thing, because it reflects a world that has totally disappeared.

The world is new, we think, and we think it is going to get newer. There are some signs that this development may not be altogether attractive. It may be, in fact, that our situation is changing too fast for our ideas. The ideas upon which this country was founded are the finest flower of the eighteenth century. They were the flower of the dialogue of that day, and they were meant to continue it, not to end it. Today, in a totally new situation, unless these ideas are re-examined and revitalized, they are likely to degenerate into slogans. A slogan is a form of words that can be indefinitely repeated without putting any strain on the mind. The task of reinterpretation and re-evaluation is the task of the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions.
