Opis: Mechanisms of Epithelial Defense - Kabelitz

Epithelial defense against infectious agents relies on the recognition of microbial products by pattern recognition receptors and the local production of antimicrobial peptides. This book provides a state-of-the-art overview of the basic characteristics and clinical relevance of antimicrobial peptides, with special emphasis on their role in skin, intestinal and lung inflammation. The evolutionary significance of antimicrobial peptides is highlighted by an in-depth analysis of their structure, activity and gene regulation in Drosophila melanogaster. Toll-like receptors are an important class of pattern recognition receptors, whose roles in recognizing bacterial molecular patterns and in the intracellular signalling pathways involved in the differentiation and function of dendritic cells are discussed. Finally, this book also addresses the role of intraepithelial lympho cytes in epithelial defense.Preface: Kabelitz, D.; Schroder, J.M.; Antimicrobial Peptides: Basic Features and Clinical Relevance; Antimicrobial Peptides in Drosophila: Structures, Activities and Gene Regulation: Imler, J.-L.; Bulet, P.; Antimicrobial Peptides in Human Skin: Harder, J.; Schroder, J.M.; Human Defensins in Crohn's Disease: A Molecular Link to Mucosal Barrier Dysfunction: Wehkamp, J.; Fellermann, K.; Stange, E.F.; Antimicrobial Peptides in Lung Inflammation: Beisswenger, C.; Bals, R.; Reciprocal Interactions of Host Cells and Microbes; Bacterial Evasion of Innate Defense at Epithelial Linings: Hornef, M.W.; Normark, S.; Henriques-Normark, B.; Rhen, M.; Recognition of Bacterial Products by Toll-Like Receptors: Helne, H.; Ulmer, A.J.; TLR Signalling and the Function of Dendritic Cells: Hemml, H.; Akira, S.; Contribution of T Cells to Epithelial Defense; Immunosurveillance by [gamma][delta] T Cells: Focus on the Murine System: Girardi, M.; Hayday, A.C.; [gamma][delta] T Cells Link Innate and Adaptive Immune Responses: Focus on Human V[gamma]9/V[delta]2 and V[delta]1 T Cells: Holtmeier, W.; Kabelitz, D.; Author Index; Subject Index.
