Powszechna Deklaracja Praw Człowieka została uchwalona przez Zgromadzenie Ogólne ONZ 10 grudnia 1948 roku. Było to wydarzenie historyczne: po raz pierwszy wspólnota międzynarodowa wzięła na siebie odpowiedzialność za obronę i promowanie specyficznych praw, uznanych za podstawowe elementy ludzkiego życia. Deklaracja zaoferowała nową optykę, ustanawiając obronę praw człowieka podstawą dążenia do świata sprawiedliwego i wolnego od strachu a także uznając nierozerwalny związek pomiędzy przestrzeganiem praw człowieka a przetrwaniem gatunku ludzkiego jako takiego.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was approved by the UN General Assembly on December 10, 1948. It was a historic event: for the first time, the international community was taking resposibility for the defence and promotion of specific rights, regarded as the basic elements of human coexistence. The UDHR offered a new prespective, establishing defence of human rights as central to the pursuit of a world free from fear and based on justice, and establishing the indissoluble link between respect of human rights and the very survival of human kind.

This book, published in close cooperation with Amnesty International, presents text of the Declaration in 6 languages, including English, French, Italian, Spanish, German and Arabic, side by side in columns for easier comparation.
