Ce livre est, en quelque sorte, une publication nouvelle: depuis que l'Acadmie des Sciences morales et dolitiques lui a dcern la moiti du prix Flix de Beau-jour, en 1847, la premire partie seule, la Biographie, a paru en 1850. Mon beau-pre avait commenc l'impression de la deuxime partie, la Mthode, vers 1867. Pourquoi ne l'a-t-il pas termine Je l'ignore. Toujours est-il qu'un diteur intelligent veut bien se charger aujourd'hui de la publication du Mmoire entier concernant le grand pdagogue suisse, et, selon le vu de M. Pompe, le destiner aux instituteurs et aux hommes qui s'intressent l'enseignement populaire.
