Excerpt from The Morning Star: History of the Children's Missionary Vessel and of the Marquesan and Micronesian Missions

It is thought desirable to prefix to this little work some explanation of the mode now in use of writing and pronouncing the words in the native languages of the Pacific Islands.

The vowels and diphthongs are sounded as follows:

a as a in father, art.
e as ey in they, or simple long a.
i as i in machine, the English long e.
o as o in no.
u as 00 in too.
ai as I, the long English i in pine.
au as ow in how.

Where two or more vowels occur together, they are not, with the above exceptions, to be pronounced together, but as so many distinct syllables; as 0-a-hu, Ha-wai-i, Pu-a-a-i-ki.

Consonants are sounded nearly as they are in English. They are, however, never doubled, and rarely end a word or syllable.
