A Library, however excellent and complete, without a catalogue would be deprived of a great part of its value; while a mere register of the treasures it contains would be of little help to the student or to the serious reader. The preparation of a catalogue which will be a faithful reflex of all that a Library has to teach and to tell is a task requiring great industry, much research, and a wide knowledge of books, and I venture to think that this catalogue is a brilliant testimony to the industry and ability of our Library staff; and that it will prove of great assistance to the lovers of art who take pleasure, not merely in the many beautiful forms of artistic creation, but who desire to seek in the history of the times in which they were produced, and the lives of the artists, a key to the incidents and emotions they portray.

I trust this catalogue may be deemed worthy of the unique and beautiful Library whose gems it seeks to crystallize and unfold.

The names of William Brown and Hugh Frederick Hornby will proclaim to all times that the merchants of Liverpool in the midst of their daily toil are not insensible to the claims of art, and are anxious that its refining and elevating influences may be enjoyed by their fellow citizens.
